Has the US Ratified the Kigali Amendment?

Has the US Ratified the Kigali Amendment? The U.S. Senate has approved the Kigali Amendment, and we are awaiting the President’s signature. As a result, the answer to the question—”Has the US Ratified the Kigali Amendment?”—not quite yet but it is now anticipated.

Keep in mind that the Senate does not technically ratify treaties. They approve or reject a treaty, which is what happened this week:

Kigali Amendment & the U.S Senate

In a very historic moment, on Wed., Sept. 21, 2022, the U.S. Senate voted to recommend the ratification of the Kigali Amendment, an international treaty to phasedown HFC refrigerants due to their high global warming potential (GWP).

Two-thirds of the U.S. senate, 69-27, voted for approval on Wednesday. Now the agreement will be sent to the White House, and the President is expected to “signing the instrument of ratification,” as the White House shared in their statement on Senate Ratification of the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol.

Ratification will officially take place when the instruments of ratification are formally exchanged between the US and foreign power(s).

More than 130 countries have ratified the agreement so far, and it appears that the U.S. will very soon be a part of that list of those who ratified.

The US Senate approval of this international treaty is an especially pivotal moment for the HVAC-R industry in the United States. Discussion about this issue has been going on for a long time, and it seems like we have finally received much of the market stability many had been seeking.

HFC refrigerants are heavily used in our everyday refrigeration and air conditioning equipment in homes, buildings, and transport around the United States.

The Kigali Amendment will impact this usage for years to come. Well, there you have it—updates on the US ratification of the Kigali Amendment.
