Minnesota Announces Refrigerant Emission Reduction Grants

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) recently announced refrigerant emission reduction grants available to certain refrigeration unit operators in a retail setting in Minnesota. In this article, we will briefly go over the new funding opportunities.

Refrigerant Emission Reduction Grants for Retailers

Refrigerant leakage from refrigeration systems can cause environmental challenges. This is because many of the refrigerants in use today have a high global warming potential (high-GWP).

Replacing systems that use such high-GWP refrigerants can be environmentally beneficial and even lower operational costs. Let’s go into more detail about the MPCA funding opportunities available for certain refrigeration operators in retail in Minnesota.

Funding Opportunities

According to the state website, the MPCA is “offering approximately $110,000 for projects that will replace existing refrigeration equipment with new equipment that uses a refrigerant with a least 50% less GWP.”

In terms of eligibility, applicants must operate a refrigeration system in a retail setting, which includes a grocery store, convenience store, or liquor store, in Minnesota. Those for-profit businesses that apply must have 250 full-time employees or fewer.

Eligible applicants must apply by Wednesday, August 31 at 4:00pm CST. The maximum grant award is $20,000 per applicant, and applicants must match at least 25% of the total project cost.
