The Murfreesboro Public Works Division has enhanced its winter weather preparedness with the acquisition of new snow plows and a significant salt stockpile. These preparations demonstrate the city’s commitment to maintaining safe roadways during challenging winter conditions in Middle Tennessee.
The city’s proactive approach includes pre-treating roads with salt brine before winter precipitation begins. Recently, the City Council authorized significant investments in winter weather management equipment, including the purchase of multiple snow plows through Viking-Cives Midwest, Inc., totaling nearly $100,000 from the FY25 budget. The new fleet includes six Boss 8′ Super Duty Steel Plows, a Boss 7’6″ HTX Steel Plow, and a Front Plow 10′ Single Axel Package.
Additionally, the Council approved the purchase of 1,000 tons of rock salt from Compass Minerals for approximately $107,000, supplementing the existing 1,500-ton stockpile. This combined inventory ensures adequate resources for treating city streets throughout the winter season.
The city’s winter weather response system operates through six designated routes, with state routes and major city streets receiving priority attention. Critical areas, including St. Thomas Rutherford Hospital and steep gradients, receive special focus. The Public Works Division maintains salt storage facilities at multiple locations: Florence Road, West Main Street, and Butler Drive.
The operation involves 60 dedicated employees who manage a sophisticated brine production system capable of generating 12,000 gallons per hour. The brine mixture, stored in a 10,000-gallon tank, combines with rock salt to create a more effective road treatment solution than traditional salt application alone.
While the Street Department handles city routes, they typically don’t service subdivision streets due to resource limitations. However, they do maintain state routes within city limits through a contract with TDOT. Residents can report hazardous road conditions by calling 615-893-4380. For minor accidents during winter weather, the Murfreesboro Police Department advises motorists to move vehicles off the roadway when possible and contact their non-emergency number at 615-893-1311.
TDOT retains responsibility for maintaining I-24 and I-840 within Rutherford County.
